ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, July 26 (UPI) -- New U.S. initiatives in Pakistan are yielding results such as intelligence sharing on operations along the border with Afghanistan, U.S. officials say.
The increased cooperation is credited to U.S. cultivation of key leaders in Pakistan, officials told the Los Angeles Times. As a result, Islamabad is cooperating more, both in letting the United States and Afghanistan know about anti-militant campaign, and in joint efforst to catch Islamist militants, the report said.
The United States is also getting Pakistani intelligence support in the effort to locate a U.S. soldier captured by the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan.
In return, the officials say, the United States has been providing Pakistan information collected by its military drones about insurgent strongholds in tribal areas to support the Pakistani military's campaign to root out militants from these areas.
The report said the Pakistani public has come to accept that militants are a big threat to the country.
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told NBC News Sunday the Taliban have come under tremendous pressure because of the Pakistani military campaign, the Press Trust of India reported.
"We have seen the Pakistani government and military really step up, which had not happened to the extent it has now. So the Taliban, which is, as I believe strongly, part of a kind of terrorist syndicate with al-Qaida at the center, is now under tremendous pressure," Clinton said.
