OREGON CITY, Ore., July 21 (UPI) -- Jurors weighing manslaughter charges against an Oregon couple whose daughter died after a failed faith healing resumed deliberations Tuesday, observers said.
After saying they were deadlocked Monday, jurors in the trial of Carl and Raylene Worthington of Oregon City reconvened in Clackamas County Court, Oregon Public Radio reported.
Clackamas County Circuit Judge Steven Maurer urged the jurors to deliberate again after receiving a message from them that read, "We remain to be a hung jury on all counts," The (Portland) Oregonian reported. Maurer questioned each of them if they thought that a verdict could be reached.
The presiding juror told Maurer he believed more time could be helpful, while other jurors disagreed, the newspaper said.
Prosecutors charged Carl Worthington, 29, and Raylene Worthington, 26, with second-degree manslaughter and criminal mistreatment in last year's death of their 15-month-old daughter, Ava, from pneumonia and a blood infection.
The toddler died after multiple faith-healing sessions were held at her parents' home, the newspaper said.
