Captured GI urges Afghan withdrawal

KABUL, Afghanistan, July 19 (UPI) -- The U.S. military says it appears captured Army Pfc. Bowe Bergdahl was forced to make a video calling on Americans to urge a withdrawal from Afghanistan.

The Pentagon confirmed Sunday Bergdahl was the soldier shown in the Taliban video posted on the Internet, nearly a month after he was captured in Paltika province.

The 23-year-old Ketchum, Idaho, resident said on the video he was being treated well but admitted he was frightened and "scared I won't be able to go home."

"Please, please bring us home so that we can go back to where we belong and not over here wasting our time and our lives," he said.

The U.S. military condemned the video as illegal propaganda and said efforts are under way to recover the hostage safely.

Bergdahl's family has requested privacy, and Ketchum Mayor Randy Hall told CNN the entire city was offering its support.

"The news is still breaking through town, and as the mayor, I can say this is a community situation," Hall said.
