Trial opens in mob attack on London cops

LONDON, July 15 (UPI) -- A London bobby testified Wednesday all he could see were feet flying around him after he was attacked by a mob last summer.

Constable Anthony Smith told the Crown Court he had been grabbed by the neck and was kicked and stomped by a crowd estimated at 40 people who attacked him and his partner after they told a teenager to pick up some litter she had dropped.

"Once I was on the ground all I could see were the feet of people trying to stamp on me," Smith testified. "I was trying to protect myself as best I could."

Smith and Constable Perry Lathwood were the first witnesses in the trial of two men and a 15-year-old girl accused of starting the melee. The men were arrested the following day when they went to a Croydon police station to file a complaint about the officers.

The Daily Mail said the incident was witnessed by a large number of shoppers and store employees, some of whom made video recordings with their cell phones.
