Missing California man found after 10 days

CAMPBELL, Calif., July 11 (UPI) -- Police in Campbell, Calif., say a local man with dementia has been found after disappearing for 10 days.

Capt. Dave Carmichael said 63-year-old Ross Abinanti, who had disappeared June 30, was found Friday in a dry creek bed behind a local restaurant, the San Jose (Calif.) Mercury News reported Saturday.

Carmichael said Abinanti was dehydrated but healthy and was soon reunited with his concerned family members.

"They were basically in shock, they were so happy," the police captain said of the family reunion. "It was lots of tears, lots of disbelief, lots of hugs."

Carmichael said Abinanti's dirty and disheveled appearance made it appear he had been hanging out in the creek area.

Abinanti's family had been coordinating a search for the missing man through e-mails to volunteers since the dementia sufferer had simply walked away from his car.

"It's so nice to have that good ending," Carmichael told the Mercury News.
