WASHINGTON, July 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. Senate and Minnesota got their full complement of senators Tuesday when comic-turned-politician Al Franken was sworn in as the chamber's newest member.

The swearing-in ceremony ended one of the longest post-election recount battles in recent U.S. political history, CNN reported. The Minnesota Supreme Court in late June declared Democrat Franken was the winner of the Nov. 4 election over Republican Norm Coleman.

With the addition of Franken, Senate Democrats have a potential filibuster-proof majority of 60.
