MOSCOW, July 1 (UPI) -- A Russian bank guard who allegedly held up two colleagues at gunpoint and made off with $8 million has been arrested, officials said Tuesday.
Alexander Shurman, 36, allegedly carried out the robbery Thursday while he and two other guards were transporting a load of cash for Sberbank, the country's largest, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported. Shurman allegedly waited until the truck was in a forest, held a gun on the other guards and then removed 250 million rubles, transferring it to another vehicle brought to the area by confederates.
Channel One reported Tuesday Shurman had been detained.
The newspaper Komsomolskaya Pravda quoted a police source who suggested Sberbank was at least partly responsible for the robbery. The source said the bank cut the salaries of its guards last month.
"Carrying huge sums daily and hardly making ends meet -- anyone would go nuts," he said.
