Missouri execution date passes under stay

ST. LOUIS, June 17 (UPI) -- Missouri inmate Reginald Clemons remained on death row Wednesday as a federal court stay of his midnight execution remained in effect.

A federal appeals court in St. Louis issued the stay on June 5 without stating a reason, although Clemons' attorneys had filed a constitutional challenge to Missouri's execution procedures.

The St. Louis (Mo.) Post-Dispatch said that neither Clemons' lawyers nor state prosecutors had been expecting the stay to be lifted prior to the 12:01 a.m. CDT execution date.

When and if the stay is lifted, the Missouri Supreme Court will set a new execution date.

Clemons was convicted in 1993 of murdering two sisters on a St. Louis bridge. He has maintained his innocence.
