MOGADISHU, Somalia, June 7 (UPI) -- Sunday's assassination of a radio station director brings to five the number of journalists killed in Somalia so far this year, authorities said.
Mukhtar Mohammad Hirabe, of Shabelle Media, was shot in the head in Mogadishu and a colleague, Ahmed Omar Tajil, seriously wounded, CNN reported.
Three of the five journalists killed this year in Somalia worked for Shabelle. Last week, gunmen kidnapped the station director for TV Universal in Somalia.
Somalia's lack of an effective government since 1991 has allowed rebel sects to thrive, especially in Mogadishu, CNN reported.
