SONOITA, Ariz., June 7 (UPI) -- Police in Arizona say 10 people were killed when a sport utility vehicle loaded with illegal immigrants rolled over on a rural highway.
The accident occurred shortly before midnight Saturday on state Route 82 near the southern Arizona community of Sonoita and left another dozen people injured.
The Department of Public Safety said the first officers on the scene found that all 22 people in the Ford Excursion had been thrown from the vehicle when it rolled over.
The cause of the accident was under investigation and criminal charges were pending, a public safety spokeswoman told The Arizona Republic.
The crash came less than a week after five people were killed in a similar incident on Interstate 10 east of Tucson involving 17 illegal immigrants.
