Prosecutor's spouse facing drug charges

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., May 28 (UPI) -- The husband of a prosecutor in Broward County, Fla., has been arrested on charges of drug possession and trafficking, police say.

The South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported Wednesday Anthony Mercer, husband of Broward County prosecutor Elizabeth Scherer-Mercer, was allegedly found in possession of nearly a pound of marijuana, 21 prescription pills and more than an ounce of cocaine.

Mercer, 35, was arrested last Thursday at a warehouse in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and allegedly confessed to preparing the illegal drugs for distribution, police allege in an arrest report.

Scherer-Mercer, 33, filed for divorce last Friday as her husband was released on a $22,100 bond.

An unidentified Broward State Attorney's Office spokesman told the Sun-Sentinel the couple, which has a 3-year-old daughter, separated three months ago.

The newspaper said the cocaine trafficking charge against Mercer, who also faces seven counts of drug possession and a single count of drug paraphernalia possession, carries a prison sentence of up to 30 years.
