Gag order in editor killing case

OAKLAND, Calif., May 14 (UPI) -- A judge in California has postponed the arraignment of two men charged with the killing of Oakland editor Chauncey Bailey.

At a hearing Wednesday in Alameda County Superior Court, Judge Allen Hymer also ordered a temporary gag order in the case and sealed the transcripts of grand jury testimony against Yusuf Bey IV, 23, and Antoine Mackey, 23. They were indicted last month on charges of killing Bailey and two other men.

Bailey was gunned down in 2007 as he walked to his office at the Oakland Post, allegedly because he had been investigating Your Black Muslim Bakery. Bey was a leader in the group, which functioned as a business and a political organization, and Mackey worked for it.

Another bakery employee, Devaughndre Broussard, has admitted shooting Bailey. He has agreed to testify against Bey and Mackey.

Reporters Without Borders released a statement saying that Bey and Mackey should be arraigned May 29, the new date, and tried promptly.
