Teens' popcorn prank ends in arrest

NEW BRITAIN, Conn., May 12 (UPI) -- Three teenagers at a Connecticut college allegedly tied exit doors in dormitories and then triggered fire alarms with burning popcorn, school officials said.

Matthew Dortch, 18, Patrick Robinson, 18, and Christopher Scifo, 19, were charged with reckless endangerment Monday after dorm rooms on the third floor of Vance Hall filled with smoke and exit doors were found tied shut, said Mark McLaughlin, a spokesman for Central Connecticut State University. No one was injured.

The three teens allegedly admitted tying the doors and then charring popcorn in a dorm microwave to create smoke and trigger the alarms, The (New Britain, Conn.) Herald reported Tuesday.

"I didn't intend to hurt anyone, just get a few laughs," Scifo told police.

Dortch, a wide receiver on the school's football team, and Robinson, a pitcher for the school's baseball team, have been suspended from school pending a university investigation, McLaughlin said. Scifo played on the school's football team before transferring to a college in Florida, police said.
