Poll: Women prefer Dems, men split

PRINCETON, N.J., May 6 (UPI) -- Women prefer the Democratic Party and men divide loyalties between the Democratic and Republican parties, a Gallup poll released Wednesday indicated.

Among women, the Democratic Party held a double-digit advantage in party identification over the Republican Party, 41 percent to 27 percent, poll results indicated. Men were almost equally divided -- 28 percent identified as Republicans and 30 percent as Democrats. In fact, 40 percent of men most likely will identify themselves as politically independent, results indicated.

The results were based on aggregate data from Gallup Polls conducted during the first quarter of this year, the Princeton, N.J., polling agency said.

The Democratic Party has held sway among females throughout the last 10 years, with support usually in the high 30 percent range, Gallup said.

Men have shifted their party identification between Republican and independent during the past decade, and no more than 31 percent identified themselves as Democrats during any given quarter, Gallup said.

Results are based on data from several polls of approximately 1,000 adults each from January through March 2009. For each poll, the margin of error is 3 percentage points.
