School lifts bullied boy's suspension

KESWICK, Ontario, May 5 (UPI) -- A Canadian school board north of Toronto has revoked a suspension given to a 15-year-old immigrant youth who punched a bully back.

The April 21 incident angered many in the town of Keswick after the unidentified 15-year-old male students scuffled in a school gymnasium. The white youth called the Korean immigrant a racial slur, pushed him and punched him in the mouth.

He wasn't aware the Korean boy has a black belt in tae kwon do. With one punch, the Korean boy broke the bully's nose.

The Korean boy was suspended from classes and told he would likely be expelled. Police also charged him with assault causing bodily harm. His first court date is scheduled for May 13, The Globe and Mail said.

However, the York Region School Board arranged a reconciliation meeting Monday between both boys and their parents. Each youth apologized and the Korean student was told to return to classes Tuesday, the report said.

It wasn't clear if prosecutors would continue the case as the Canadian youth's parents asked police to drop the charges, the Globe said.
