Fla. man accused of killing baby arrested

TAMPA, Fla., May 5 (UPI) -- A Florida man suspected of killing his ex-girlfriend's 3-month-old son by throwing him out a car onto a highway was arrested Tuesday, police said.

The St. Petersburg Times reported Richard Anthony McTear Jr., 21, of Tampa allegedly attacked Jasmine Marie Bedwell, 17, and her child, Emanuel Wesley Murray, at her home about 3:15 a.m. McTear then allegedly fled in his car with the baby. A photographer from Tampa TV station WTVT found the child near the road near Interstate 275, the newspaper said.

McTear, whose multiple prior convictions include felony battery and narcotics possession, was apprehended several hours later, the Times said.

"It's hard to find words to describe why someone would do this to a poor, defenseless child," Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office Maj. Harold Winsett said.

McTear is an ex-boyfriend of the baby's mother, said Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Debbie Carter. Court records show Bedwell filed a domestic violence complaint against McTear in April. Bedwell failed to appear in court Monday and the case was dropped.
