Britain bans 22 for promoting hate, terror

LONDON, May 5 (UPI) -- A right-wing radio broadcaster and a former Ku Klux Klan grand wizard were among the U.S. citizens banned from Britain, Home Secretary Jacqui Smith said.

Michael Weiner, who uses the name Michael Savage on the radio, and Stephen "Don" Black, a former KKK grand wizard, were among 22 people banned from Britain Monday until March 2010 under a law that excludes foreigners who espouse hatred and violence, The Times of London reported Tuesday.

"Coming to this country is a privilege," Smith said. "We won't allow people into this country who are going to propagate the sort of views ... that fundamentally go against our values."

The list also includes Yunis al-Astal, a Hamas leader; Erich Gliebe, the leader of a U.S. neo-Nazi group; Mike Guzovsky, a Jewish extremist and Fred Waldron Phelps and his daughter, Shirley Phelps.

Phelps, an American Baptist pastor, and his daughter were barred for their homophobic views, Smith said.
