Romney says GOP should fight activist pick

WASHINGTON, May 3 (UPI) -- Former Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney said Sunday the GOP might have to wage a fight against President Barack Obama's Supreme Court pick.

Appearing on CNN's "State of the Union" program, the former Massachusetts governor said Republicans should vociferously oppose a nominee to replace Supreme Court Justice Davis Souter who would be an activist judge.

"The place where I think we draw the line is: Is this an individual who will follow the Constitution and the law, or is this an individual who believes in making the law," he said. "If it's the latter, I think we should stand up and scream long and hard."

Souter, a reliable liberal vote on the high court, has announced he will leave the bench this summer.

On Time magazine including Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, the 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee, and conservative talk-show host Rush Limbaugh on its 100 of the world's "most influential" figures list, Romney said there are more influential GOP members that Palin and Limbaugh.

"I think there are a lot more influential Republicans than that would suggest," Romney said. "But was that the issue on the most beautiful people or the most influential people? I'm not sure. If it's the most beautiful, I understand. We're not real cute."
