Saudi official grants girl, 8, divorce

UNAIZAH, Saudi Arabia, April 30 (UPI) -- Faisal bin Bandar, prince of Saudi Arabia's Qassim Province, has granted an 8-year-old girl a divorce from her 47-year-old husband, a judicial source said.

The prince held an audience with the girl's husband and convinced the man to agree to the divorce in the city of Unaizah, al-Arabiya reported Thursday.

The husband, whose identity was not reported, also agreed to drop his request to be compensated for an $8,000 dowry to the girl's family prior to their marriage.

The man had received the young girl's hand in marriage from her father as compensation for an outstanding debt, al-Arabiya said.

Two prior legal attempts by the girl's mother to free her from her marriage were rejected by a judge who said the girl had to reach puberty before applying for a divorce.
