Roh apologizes amid bribery allegations

SEOUL, April 30 (UPI) -- Former South Korean President Roh Moo-hyun said he is sorry to have "disappointed" his fellow citizens through his alleged involvement in a corruption case.

Roh said prior to a meeting Thursday with the Supreme Prosecutors' Office he was ashamed for being connected to a $6 million bribery case, The Korea Times said.

"I am deeply ashamed before my fellow citizens. I am sorry to have disappointed you. I will return safely after the questioning,'' Roh, 62, said.

Prosecutors have accused Roh of accepting up to $6 million in bribes from Taekwang Chief Executive Officer Park Yeon-cha during his time as president.

Roh, whose presidency ended in February 2008, has also been tied by prosecutors to former presidential secretary Chung Sang-moon, who allegedly embezzled $900,000 in presidential funds.

The Times said Roh has denied all allegations of bribery but did acknowledge his wife borrowed $1 million from Park in order to pay private debts.
