Mom who killed sons hospitalized

MANCHESTER, England, April 28 (UPI) -- A judge ordered indefinite hospitalization Tuesday for a British woman who admitted stabbing her two young sons, saying she needs "treatment, not punishment."

During a hearing in Manchester Crown Court, lawyers presented evidence that Jael Mullings, 22, suffers from paranoid schizophrenia, The Daily Telegraph reported. Judge John Griffiths-Williams also heard testimony about her confused attempts to get help and about her smoking marijuana in the hours before she killed her sons.

"You were clearly devoted to Romario and Delayno, but for some time you have suffered from paranoid schizophrenia," the judge said. "I have no doubt you will carry the very heavy burden of your responsibility for ending their lives for as long as you live.

"I am satisfied your mental responsibility for your actions (was) so substantially impaired you require treatment, not punishment."

Mullings pleaded guilty at a previous hearing to manslaughter with diminished responsibility.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating why police did not get to her house until after the boys had been killed. Earlier in the day, Mullings called a doctor's office twice, and staff there called police after a doctor went to her house and she refused to admit him.
