ATHENS, Ga., April 26 (UPI) -- Law enforcement officials spanned out nationwide Sunday, searching for a college professor who allegedly killed his wife and two men at a theater in Athens, Ga.
University of Georgia professor George Zinkhan, 56, last was seen Saturday driving a red 2005 Jeep Liberty with Georgia plate number AIX 1376,Athens-Clarke Police Capt. Clarence Holeman told the Athens Banner-Herald.
The university sent text messages to more than 25,000 students and employees warning them Zinkhan was on the loose.
Police were checking airports to ensure Zinkhan didn't try to leave the country, Holeman said. Zinkhan has relatives in Austin, Texas, and may be headed there, The Banner-Herald said.
Zinkhan is accused of shooting his wife, Marie Bruce, 47; Tom Tanner, 40; and Ben Teague, 63, Saturday at a gathering of Town and Gown Players, a community theater group in Athens. Two others were wounded and remained hospitalized.
Zinkhan left his two young children with a neighbor after the shootings, saying there was an emergency, police said. The children did not witness the shootings.
Holeman raised the possibility the shooting was a crime of passion.
"Some people are saying it could be a love triangle or something like that," Holeman said.
