BOSTON, April 26 (UPI) -- The family of accused Craigslist killer Philip Markoff is standing by him while he sits in a Boston jail, his lawyer says.
John Salsberg told The Boston Globe that Jonathan Markoff visited his brother Saturday and was also at the jail Friday with his parents, Richard Markoff and Susan Haynes.
Markoff, 23, a medical student at Boston University, allegedly shot and killed Julissa Brisman of New York, who had offered massage services on Craigslist. He is also charged with robbing and binding another woman at a Boston hotel near the one where Brisman died.
Those who knew Markoff in school and college were shocked by the arrest, reports said. Markoff, who grew up in a small town in upstate New York where he lived with his mother and stepfather, was an honor student, although he was also known in college for marathon weekend poker games.
"If there were any clues, he hid them well," a college friend who did not want to be identified told the Globe.
