Father accused of beating child to death

KAOHSIUNG, Taiwan, April 23 (UPI) -- Authorities in the Taiwanese city of Kaohsiung allege a man beat his 2-year-old daughter to death with a broomstick for disobeying him.

The Kaohsiung Prosecutors Office alleges the man, identified only by his surname Chang, had beaten his unidentified young daughter with a broomstick on three separate occasions, the Taipei Times said Thursday.

The final beating on Tuesday resulted in the broomstick breaking in half and the girl receiving fatal injuries, authorities said.

"Preliminary medical tests show that she died of a brain hemorrhage. We feel there are some discrepancies between the statements made by the father and the surface wounds we found on the girl," prosecutor Chung Chu-sheng alleged.

An official cause of death will be determined by a scheduled autopsy of the girl's body, Chung added.

Wu Li-hsueh, Bureau of Social Affairs director for the Kaohsiung County government, told the Times the man's 7-year-old son has been placed in temporary foster care.
