Softball player killed by ball

MISHAWAKA, Ind., April 20 (UPI) -- A 24-year-old member of a men's slow-pitch softball team died when the ball hit him in the neck, authorities in Mishawaka, Ind., said.

Alberto Naranjo of Elkhart, Ind., collapsed Saturday after being struck with the ball as he was sliding into home plate, said teammate Brian Forray.

"He started to get up and then he just fell face first," Forray said.

Naranjo was taken off life support and pronounced dead Sunday after doctors obtained approval from his family to transplant his organs to other patients in need, said St. Joseph County Coroner Michael O'Connell.

Naranjo was a full-time student at Indiana University, The South Bend (Ind.) Tribune reported Monday.

"He was the nicest guy on our team," said coach Keith Welsh. "People always say that about someone who has passed on, but he really was. Nobody could have met him and had anything bad to say about him."
