Great Train Robbery inmate to seek parole

NORWICH, England, April 19 (UPI) -- Ronnie Biggs will seek parole from Britain's Norwich Prison where he is serving a 30-year sentence for the Great Train Robbery, his son says.

Michael Biggs said his father, convicted of taking part in the famed 1963 robbery, deserves to be freed as he approaches his 80th birthday, Sky News reported Sunday.

"I think it's the obvious thing to do," the younger Biggs said. "If other people are entitled to get parole, why shouldn't my father? He represents no threat to society."

Biggs, who turns 80 Aug. 8, was convicted of taking part in the Aug. 8, 1963, theft of $3.84 million from a Glasgow-to-London mail train.

Biggs escaped London's Wandsworth Prison in 1965 and lived for 35 years in Brazil before voluntarily returning to England in 2001.

Biggs's parole application will be judged by Justice Secretary Jack Straw.
