The aid workers reportedly were abducted while traveling from Rabdhure district to Hudur, the provincial capital of Bakol.

Foreign aid workers and journalists are regularly kidnapped in Somalia, which has been marred in political strife for nearly two decades. Shabelle reported that hostages are generally well treated and often released after a ransom is paid.

More than 3 million Somalis, about a third of the population, depend on emergency food aid for survival, it was reported.
