Opening of Mumbai terror trial delayed

MUMBAI, April 15 (UPI) -- The trial of the only surviving suspect from the deadly attack on Mumbai has been delayed after his lawyer was removed, officials said Wednesday.

The judge removed attorney Anjali Waghmare before the trial's scheduled start Wednesday because she also was representing a witness in the case, CNN reported. The judge said representing the witness and defendant Mohammed Ajmal Kasab was a conflict of interest.

Waghmare said she didn't know the other person she was representing was a witness. She was appointed by an Indian court two weeks ago to represent Kasab and it was unclear who would replace her.

Kasab, a Pakistani national, faces more than a dozen charges, including murder, conspiracy to wage a war against the nation and terrorism. He is accused of being one of 10 gunmen who waged a three-day assault on India's entertainment and financial hub in November in which more than 160 people died.

Wednesday's proceeding was to have been in a makeshift court set up in a jail where Kasab is being held.
