DEARBORN, Mich., April 10 (UPI) -- A student at a Michigan community college shot a female student in a campus building Friday and then used his shotgun to kill himself, police said.
Police officers responding to a call just before 1 p.m. EDT of shots fired at Henry Ford Community College in Dearborn heard another shot as they entered the Fine Arts Center, The Detroit News reported. They found the bodies of Anthony Powell, 28, of Detroit and Asia McGowan, 20, of Ecorse in a first-floor room.
The campus was briefly locked down after the shootings, and classes were canceled for the rest of the day.
Police would not describe the relationship between Powell and McGowan.
Carolyn Cajas, 39, of Dearborn said she was in a theater group that recently produced "Wisdom and Wonder," a play that featured McGowan.
"It's going to affect us all here. We're like family," she said.
Julia Barhoumeh told the News she was in the next building.
"Everyone started running out of the building," the nursing student said. "I just ran. I didn't know if I was going to be the next target."
