JAYAPURA, Indonesia, April 9 (UPI) -- A small-bodied Avia Star plane was believed to have crashed short of the Wamena airport in Indonesia Thursday.
It wasn't reported immediately how many people were aboard. Papua Gov. Barnabas Suebu, who was initially scheduled to fly to Wamena to monitor the election, was a late cancellation, Antara News reported.
The plane left Sentani airport in Jayapura for a 1-hour flight to Wamena in the Jayawijaya district. A witness at the Wamena airport said he saw the plane circle several times before disappearing.
"The plane must have crashed because we saw a column of black smoke and fire in the air on Mount Pike near Wamena," he told Antara News.
