TRACY, Calif., April 7 (UPI) -- The body of a missing 8-year-old Tracy, Calif., girl has been found in a suitcase in a pond at a dairy farm near her home, authorities said.
Sandra Cantu had been missing since March 27, when she left her home to play with a friend a few houses away, and then left her friend's home to go to another friend's house.
Authorities went to the dairy farm pond Monday after getting a call from workers there who said they saw a black suitcase come to the surface, CNN reported.
Tracy police spokesman Tony Sheneman said news of the discovery devastated the girl's family, CNN reported early Tuesday.
"They have just experienced the unimaginable," he said.
"It is very difficult for everybody involved," Sheneman said. "We were optimistic that we would find Sandra alive."
