Initially, officers thought Nathaniel Shepherd, 22, was carrying a grenade, but it turned out to be an urn filled the ashes of his grandfather. The knife was found inside Shepherd's carry-on bag.

On Monday, a federal judge granted Shepherd a $10,000 bond pending the case's resolution.

At the Norfolk airport in March, a security officer found the 7-1/2-inch knife inside a shoe, the report said.

The newspaper reported he admitted he purposely tried to conceal the knife and that his mother had warned him not to try to smuggle it on the flight.
