U.S. committed to two-state solution

WASHINGTON, April 1 (UPI) -- The United States is committed to working with the Israeli government to work for peace and stability in the region, the U.S. State Department said Wednesday.

State spokesman Gordon Duguid said the United States would work with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu's government and was "unalterably committed to Israel's security," despite Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman's comments that Israel wasn't obligated by the accords Israeli and Palestinian officials reached in Annapolis, Md.

"There is just one document we are obliged to abide by -- the Road Map confirmed by the United Nations Security Council," Lieberman said after he was sworn in Wednesday.

"We have full confidence in and will continue to support the government of Israel," Duguid said during the briefing, "and we work together for a durable and lasting peace in the region. ... (We) support the two-state solution and we will continue to work for that."

Duguid told reporters Netanyahu said he will work for peace with the Palestinians and the region.

While other foreign policy strategies are under review, the two-state solution is not, he said.

"We're committed to that solution," Duguid said.
