MOSCOW, March 26 (UPI) -- Fourteen people were killed in Russia Thursday when a bus and a truck collided on the Moscow-Nizhny Novgorod-Ufa highway, officials said.
Interfax reported that four people survived the crash. Earlier reports noted a higher death toll.
Boris Kolosov, a spokesman for the Vladimir Regional Emergency Situations Department, said the two coaches were traveling from Ulyanovsk to Moscow's Cherkizovsky and Luzhniki markets.
Police are investigating the incident, Interfax reported.
"A criminal case has been started on charges of violating traffic rules leading to deaths," Alexander Kunakov of the Vladimir traffic police said.
RIA Novosti reported that the crash occurred when the truck drove into the oncoming lane and collided head-on with the bus near the town of Petushki. The bus subsequently burst into flames.
The bus reportedly was headed from Ulyanovsk to Moscow and the truck was headed toward Moscow, Interfax said.
