BELFAST, Northern Ireland, March 24 (UPI) -- A second man was charged Tuesday in the shooting death of a police officer in Northern Ireland, officials said.
The Guardian reported the 37-year-old suspect is to appear in court Wednesday in the slaying of Constable Stephen Carroll. He also is accused of possessing a gun with the intent to harm others.
The British newspaper reported the suspect is believed to be a former Sinn Fein councilor who left the party about a dozen years ago.
Previously, a 17-year-old boy was charged in the officer's death, which was claimed by the outlawed Continuity IRA, The Times of London reported.
Carroll was shot in the back of the head this month while in a patrol car after answering a woman's call for help at her home in Craigavon.
Six people, including the teen and the woman who placed the call for help, were being held in connection with the killing, The Times said.
