Madagascar's Rajoelina takes office

ANTANANARIVO, Madagascar, March 21 (UPI) -- Madagascar's Andry Rajoelina was sworn in Saturday as Africa's youngest president at a ceremony in the Indian Ocean island nation's capital, Antananarivo.

Rajoelina, 34, a former disc jockey, took the oath of office at the main sports stadium despite boycotts by diplomats from many countries, the BBC reported.

Madagascar's highest court this week approved Rajoelina's ascension to power amid mass protests and a rebellion by elements of the country's armed forces against elected leader Marc Ravalomanana. The United States has cut off non-humanitarian aid to Madagascar, calling the move a coup, while the African Union said Friday it had suspended the country from its group.

The European Union also condemned Rajoelina's rise to power and the Southern African Development Community has threatened sanctions against Madagascar, the BBC said.

Ravalomanana's whereabouts after being deposed were still unknown, the British broadcaster said.
