Students, Spanish police clash, many hurt

BARCELONA, Spain, March 19 (UPI) -- Dozens of students and police officers were injured during violent student protests over Spanish education reform.

Wednesday's altercation, which left two dozen students injured and more than 30 officers hurt, started when police tried to forcibly remove students from a demonstration at a Barcelona university.

Student representatives accused the officers of engaging in "brutality," El Mundo newspaper reported Thursday.

Police officers said students were to blame for refusing to end their demonstration when prompted by police.
