Cab driver convicted of assaulting women

LONDON, March 14 (UPI) -- A London cab driver drugged then sexually assaulted 12 women, including raping one of the victims, a jury has found.

A jury convicted John Worboys, 51, on 19 charges related to the 12 attacks, which authorities suspect are a fraction of the cabbie's total victims, The Guardian reported Saturday.

Police said after Friday's verdict they were expecting additional women to come forward with allegations of assault against Worboys.

With police receiving 85 complaints to date, they suspect Worboys may have assaulted more than 100 women while working as a London cabbie for 13 years.

Worboys was initially arrested in July 2007, but was released by police after being questioned. Before being arrested again in February 2008, Worboys is suspected of having sexually assaulted another 29 women.

One victim told the Guardian that gap indicates a possible problem in police procedures.

"This case raises serious issues that must be addressed," the unidentified woman, who was attacked when she was 19, said. "There needs to be scrutiny of the police and how they dealt with these matters."
