PEARLAND, Texas, March 9 (UPI) -- Law enforcement agencies in Pearland, Texas, suspended their search Monday for a gunman believed hiding near an elementary school, officials said.

Authorities began searching for the man after receiving reports that a gunman was seen in an area around an elementary school Monday morning, Houston television station KHOU reported. Police said a man in with a gun tried to carjack a vehicle owned by a resident in the neighborhood. Reports indicated the suspect fired upon another person, then turned on police.

"We don't believe the suspect is in the school (Magnolia Elementary), but the school is in our perimeter. In the event he makes it into the school, we wanted to get the students and staff away from the area," said Pearland Police Lieutenant Onesimo Lopez.

Officers said they searched for the suspect on foot, on horseback and by helicopter, the TV station said.

Pearland school district officials asked parents of the elementary school students not to take their children to the school, but to another campus.
