Brain, eye key to maul victim recovery

CLEVELAND, March 5 (UPI) -- The Stamford, Conn., woman mauled by a 200-pound chimpanzee last month suffered severe brain and eye injuries, a hospital report said Thursday.

The Cleveland Clinic where Charla Nash was being treated said she lost her nose, upper and lower lips, eyelids and both hands and sustained significant traumatic brain injury, The Hartford (Conn.) Courant reported..

She also suffered extensive soft tissue injuries to her face, lost the bony structures in her mid-face area and sustained eye injuries that threaten her vision, the clinic said.

The hospital said "critical issues still remain" in regard to her brain and eye injuries, the Courant said.

Nash is listed in critical condition. She was mauled by a chimp owned by her friend Sandra Herold, who said she didn't know what prompted the attack since the animal was familiar with the victim. Different clothes and a different car might have been a reason, she said.

Police killed the animal after the attack.
