Trial set for suspect in editor's death

OAKLAND, Calif., Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The man accused in the shotgun slaying off Oakland (Calif.) Post Editor Chauncey Bailey will go to trial in May, a judge says.

Alameda County Judge Morris Jacobson set 21-year-old Devaughndre Broussard's trial for May 18, the San Francisco Chronicle reported Saturday.

Broussard, who once served as a handyman for the now-defunct Your Black Muslim Bakery, stands accused of fatally shooting the 57-year-old editor in Oakland on Aug. 2, 2007.

Attorney LeRue Grim, who is representing Broussard, alleges his client offered a false confession to investigators at the behest of bakery head Yusuf Bey IV. Bey is not charged in Bailey's death but faces charges in another matter.

Police maintain Broussard targeted Bailey in retaliation for the journalist's reporting about the bakery's financial problems, the Chronicle said.

The newspaper said in addition to a murder charge, Broussard will face charges of firearm possession, discharging a firearm and causing great bodily injury.
