Politkovskaya, an outspoken critic of the Kremlin at the time of her death, was shot and killed in October 2006 outside her Moscow home.

The Makhmudov brothers are the siblings of Rustam Makhmudov, who is suspected of masterminding the alleged contract-style killing.

Before her death, Politkovskaya reported on human rights abuses that took place in Chechnya as well as acts of brutality committed by Russian military forces.
