Man charged in sexual assaults of girls

PITTSBURGH, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- A 39-year-old man has been charged with sexually assaulting two girls, ages 3 and 9, after allegedly being tied to the crimes by his DNA, Pittsburgh police say.

City police Detective Scott Evans said DNA evidence led to Michael R. Lipinski facing charges ranging from kidnapping to rape of a child in connection to the two nighttime kidnappings that occurred in 2002 and 2005, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said Thursday.

Lipinski's DNA had been on file since last year when he was convicted of three sexual assaults.

The charges filed Wednesday against Lipinski brought some semblance of closure to the two abduction and sexual assault cases that had plagued Pennsylvania investigators for years, the Post-Gazette said.

The 3-year-old Wilkinsburg, Pa., girl and 9-year-old Brighton Heights, Pa., girl allegedly assaulted by Lipinski had both been taken from their own homes at nighttime, the Post-Gazette said.

Allegheny County police Superintendent Charles Moffatt told the newspaper it wasn't until an FBI Combined DNA Index System allegedly matched Lipinski's DNA with DNA evidence from the two cases on Jan. 29 that the convict became a suspect.
