BEIRUT, Lebanon, Feb. 14 (UPI) -- The United States says it will give more funding to efforts to solve the 2005 assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafiq Hariri.
As thousands gathered in Martyrs' Square in downtown Beirut Saturday to mark the fourth anniversary of Hariri's slaying, U.S. Secretary of State Hilary Clinton said Washington would contribute more to efforts to track down those responsible for his death, CNN reported.
"The United States is confident that the Special Tribunal for Lebanon will bring to justice those responsible for financing, planning, and carrying out the assassination of former Prime Minister Hariri," Clinton said in a written statement. "The United States pledges $6 million for the second year of the Tribunal's operations, subject to Congressional approval of the FY09 budget, in addition to the $14 million already contributed."
The U.N. Special Tribunal for Lebanon has found links between Syria's government and Hariri's assassination, which led to widespread protests and eventually the withdrawal of Syrian troops from Lebanon, CNN said.
