U.S., Italy probe Rome jet-bird accident

WASHINGTON, Feb. 10 (UPI) -- U.S. and Italian investigators say they are cooperating to look into a crash landing in Rome that happened last year after a jet struck a flock of birds.

Citing similarities to last month's ditching of a US Airways jet into the Hudson River in New York, Italian officials are teaming with American counterparts to probe a Nov. 10 crash landing at Rome's Ciampino Airport, USA Today reported Tuesday.

National Transportation Safety Board spokesman Peter Knudson told the newspaper that US Airways Flight 1549 and the Ryanair Boeing 737-800 involved in the Rome incident had the same type of engines.

The Ryanair jet struck a massive flock of starlings as it approached the airport for landing, which reduced thrust in both engines, the airline and the Italian accident investigation agency ANSV say. The six crew members and 166 passengers escaped the Ryanair flight unharmed, USA Today said.
