SEOUL, Feb. 2 (UPI) -- Anti-Pyongyang protesters say they will attach money to propaganda leaflets dropped onto North Korean soil urging readers to defect.
A group of South Koreans who claim to be relatives of people kidnapped by Pyongyang showed reporters in Seoul Monday how they intend to attach currency to leaflets dropped over the North from balloons, the South Korean news agency Yonhap reported.
"We will disseminate North Korean 5,000-won notes together with anti-Pyongyang leaflets around February 16, the birthday of (North Korean) Chairman Kim Jong Il," said Choi Sung Yong, leader of a union of abductee family members.
Speaking at a South Korean Unification Ministry office, Choi displayed one hundred North Korean banknotes his group plans to use to attract leaflet readers, even as ministry officials said the move was illegal because the group is using imported North Korean currency for the stunt.
"If someone brings in North Korean currency to our country, he or she should report it to the government. But the Unification Ministry never endorsed the entry of the money," Kim Ho Nyoun, the ministry's spokesman, told Yonhap.
