Snowmobiler dies in storm, kids survive

WINNIPEG, Ontario, Feb. 1 (UPI) -- Two Canadian children survived getting lost in a snowstorm while snowmobiling on Lake Winnipeg with their father but he died, authorities said.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the 51-year-old Winnipeg man suffered "a medical emergency" Saturday. His 14-year-old son and 11-year-old daughter called 911 about 3 p.m. but emergency crews couldn't pinpoint their location on the lake, the Winnipeg Sun reported Sunday.

Despite blowing snow that created whiteout conditions, the children made it to the shore by snowmobile but weren't found until about 6 p.m.

Their father was found about 9 p.m. but was pronounced dead at a hospital in Pine Falls, the newspaper said. The children were treated and released.

The names of the family members were not released.
