Federal probe sought for editor's killing

OAKLAND, Calif., Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Reporters Without Borders asked the U.S. Justice Department in a letter Thursday to investigate the killing of an editor in Oakland, Calif.

Chauncey Bailey was shot to death in August 2007 as he walked to his job at the Oakland Post. The shooting appears to be linked to an investigation he had done into Your Black Muslim Bakery, an Oakland group that ran a chain of bakeries.

"The police investigation into this brutal murder has been unsatisfactory in that the evidence, recorded by the police and uncovered by investigative reporters, implies that the accused murderer is being used as a scapegoat by the perpetrator(s) and/ or mastermind(s) of the crime," Reporters Without Borders said in a letter to Attorney General Eric Holder. "It also suggests that local police officials may be protecting those responsible for Mr. Bailey's death.

While California Attorney General Jerry Brown has ordered an investigation into the way the Oakland Police Department handled the killing, Reporters Without Borders said that he may, as a former Oakland mayor, have a conflict of interest.
