BELLFLOWER, Calif., Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Octuplets born in California are doing well and are all breathing on their own one day after their birth, doctors said Tuesday.
Dr. Mandhir Gupta, a neo-natologist at a Kaiser Permanente hospital in Bellflower, Calif., who led a team of 46 medical personnel in delivering the babies, told KTLA-TV, Los Angeles, that all eight babies were in stable condition on their second day of life.
The babies were doing "very, very well," Gupta said.
The six boys and two girls are the world's second known set of live-born octuplets and ranged in weight from 1 pound, 8 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces, hospital officials said. The parents of the babies have chosen to remain anonymous.
Doctors, however, cautioned reporters there is still the possibility that one or more of the octuplets may need a breathing tube again, and more dangers await when they begin feeding. Doctors have indicated the babies' mother plans to breast-feed them, KTLA-TV said.
