Spanish authorities said the victims were young baseball players, aged 9 to 12, who fled inside the sports complex in Sant Boi de Llobregat when the winds hit, only to die when a metal roof and part of the building's concrete siding collapsed. CNN said local media reported winds of up to 99 mph in parts of Catalonia, strong enough to qualify as a Category 2 hurricane.

Resident of northern Spain were advised to stay indoors, while airports suffered delays, as did the Madrid-Barcelona high-speed train line, authorities said.

In southwestern France, the strong winds knocked out power for about 1.2 million homes, utility officials said. Two drivers in Les Landes, France, were killed Saturday when trees fell on their cars, while a 78-year-old man also died there after being struck by debris near his home, police told CNN.
